Your Guide to Understanding and Buying Whitehall Whirlpools, Cold Tanks, and Accessories

Hydrotherapy whirlpools and cold tanks have long been proven tools for musculoskeletal rehabilitation, athletic performance, and faster post-activity recovery. Their effectiveness continues to make them essential across athletics, clinical therapy, and personal wellness.

Whitehall leads the industry in heavy-duty Type 304 stainless steel whirlpools, turbines, and cold tanks, offering a wide range of designs, sizes, and configurations to serve athletic programs, therapy clinics, hospitals, and home users alike.

The Mobile Whirlpool or Cold Tank Configuration

As the name suggests, mobile tanks are mounted on heavy-duty swivel casters for easy movement and secure locking. Because they require no special plumbing connections, mobile whirlpool tanks are especially versatile. A standard reversing turbine pumps water out through a hose to a nearby sink or drain, while an optional 12-inch auxiliary drain hose allows gravity draining directly into a floor drain. Mobile tanks do not use a Separate Drain and Overflow (SDO) assembly.

The Stationary Whirlpool or Cold Tank Configuration

Stationary whirlpools require a permanent plumbing connection or placement over a floor drain, which limits where they can be installed. The drain outlet is located at the turbine end of the tank and includes a standard 2-inch high-capacity gravity drain for faster emptying. A Separate Drain and Overflow (SDO) assembly is available for stationary whirlpools and cold tanks and is strongly recommended for upper-floor installations to help protect against flooding.

The Stationary Whirlpool with Legs or Cold Tank Configuration

Stationary whirlpools with legs require a permanent plumbing connection or placement over a drain, which limits installation options. The drain outlet is located at the turbine end of the tank, and a standard reversing turbine pumps water out through a hose to a nearby sink or drain.

The added leg height provides clearance for cleaning beneath the tank, while adjustable legs allow the unit to be leveled on sloped floors—common in training room hydrotherapy areas—to ensure proper drainage. Stationary whirlpools with legs do not use a Separate Drain and Overflow (SDO) assembly.

Other Accommodation Configurations

Mobile with Handle: Includes a handle to more easily move the whirlpool

Mobile with Undercarriage: Provides greater clearance to move conveniently move the tank over objects

Mobile with Lift Device: Allows the whirlpool to be conveniently elevated and lowered

Stationary with Pedestal: Elevates the whirlpool tank to a higher level for convenience and patient ease of access in different seating settings

Whitehall Products Question and Answer (Q & A)

Q. Are all the Whitehall whirlpool and cold tanks made with Type 304 stainless steel?

A. Yes. All whirlpools and tanks are made from Type 304 stainless steel for strength and durability. All add-ons and accessories that regularly come into contact with water are also constructed from Type 304 stainless steel.

Q. Can a whirlpool or cold tank be “customized” with a team or organization’s logo and color finish options?

A. Yes, for an additional cost, a whirlpool or cold tank can have a logo and color placed on the tank with a unique process called Enviro-Glaze powder coat finish. The coating bonds with the stainless steel to create a surface that is resistant to cracks, chips, and bubbles. The available color options, added to the stainless steel tanks, are:  All Stainless Steel, Black (EG07), White (EG10), Red (EG15), Blue (EG13).

Q. Are the Whitehall whirlpools and cold tanks custom made?

A. Yes, all are custom made after an order has been placed. As such, whirlpools and cold tanks are non-returnable and non-refundable.

Q. What is the period of time from order placement to shipment?

A. Lead times may vary depending on order volume and seasonal demand but are typically between 4 and 6 weeks from the date of purchase. Some whirlpool products may be available sooner; please contact us for current availability of in-stock items.

Q. Do whirlpool tanks require professional installation?

A. Yes. Installation should be completed by a licensed plumber and electrician to ensure proper water supply, drainage, electrical safety, and compliance with applicable local codes. It is also recommended that the athletic trainer or clinician using the tubs be consulted to ensure proper positioning and mobility for functional use.

Q. Can individuals buy Whitehall therapy tanks for home use?

A. Yes, an increasing number of homeowners are purchasing whirlpools or cold tanks for wellness use in home spa areas. It is important to understand the plumbing and electrical requirements for proper placement, and plumbers or construction professionals are often consulted prior to purchase.

Q. What is the difference between a therapy tank and therapy tub?

A. The terms “tank” and “tub” are often used interchangeably. Collectively, whirlpool and cold tanks are often referred to as therapy tanks.

Q. How are the therapy tanks shipped?

A. The therapy tanks are shipped via freight positioned on a pallet.

Q. How is the best way to purchase a whirlpool or cold tank?

A. We recommend that you submit a “Request A Quote” for the products you would like to purchase. We will provide you a quote for a competitive price to help you through the entire process from requesting the quote to delivery of the product.

Q. Can an old whirlpool be used as a cold tank?

A. This question is sometimes asked because at some point in the past federal law required that a whirlpool tank, then classified as a Class II Medical Device, could not be refitted with a new turbine if the one that came with the tank became old and eventually stopped working. That is no longer the case. However, Whitehall Manufacturing states that they reserve the right to evaluate the age and condition of an old whirlpool to determine if it can safely be fitted with a new turbine. It is also noted that an old whirlpool tank whose turbine has expired and stopped working, can be converted for use as a cold tank.

Q. What is the best practice for cleaning and caring for your stainless steel whirlpool or cold tank?

Stainless steel resists corrosion due to its chromium content, which forms a natural protective film when exposed to oxygen, moisture, or water. Discoloration or staining can usually be removed with proper cleaning and drying, allowing the protective layer to regenerate. Most rust issues are caused by harsh cleaners or poor maintenance, not manufacturing defects. Following proper care recommendations helps preserve the tank’s appearance and longevity.

Approved Cleaning Solutions

Use only gentle, non-abrasive cleaners that will not damage the stainless steel surface or its protective layer.

Cleaning Products to Avoid

Certain products can scratch, corrode, or permanently damage stainless steel and should never be used.

Prohibited Product Type

Reason for Avoidance

Abrasive powders or scrub cleaners (e.g., Comet®, Ajax®, Bon Ami)

Can scratch and dull the surface

Strong acids or alkaline chemicals

Break down the protective oxide layer

Chlorine-based products or bleach

Cause pitting, corrosion, and rust

Preventive Care Tips

Good daily habits are just as important as proper cleaning products.

  • Remove metal or steel items from the tank surface when not in use
  • Avoid allowing saltwater or very hard water to sit on the surface
  • Do not leave salt, brine, or salty residues on the stainless steel
  • Dry the tank after use to prevent mineral deposits and water spots

Handling Stubborn Stains or Light Scratches

For tougher marks or minor surface scratches:

  • Apply a stainless steel cleaner or polish to the affected area
  • Use a synthetic, non-metal abrasive pad (such as a general-purpose Scotch-Brite™ pad)
  • Gently rub in the direction of the metal grain—never against it
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry completely

This method helps minimize surface damage while restoring a consistent finish.
